Pssst… Here’s where you should be recruiting top talent!

Nick Corcodilos is the host of Ask The Headhunter® and author of How to Work with Headhunters (2009) and How Can I Change Careers? (2009).

In this Pssst… Nick outlines his expectations of how the job market will level the field for great talent as the economy is destined to recover.

"During a bust, revenues and profits crash. Business tanks, and companies lay off workers because they can’t afford them. As the cycle turns and we start toward a boom (or think we are, anyway), sales take off, revenues spike, and profits surge."

"If you want to recruit top talent — dedicated workers who are ready to move — you need look no farther than the most profitable companies that haven’t been hiring. They may be advertising jobs, but…., they’re just pretending. They’re not hiring at levels significant enough to sacrifice their artificial profits. Their best employees are ripe for the picking."

Have faith… you're worth more than what they're paying you… Read this!

Pssst…. Wanna Buy A Regional Jet Cheap?

ae-erjs
Benét J. Wilson is a freelance aviation/travel journalist and blogger based in Washington, D.C.  She’s also director of media relations for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

She’s a trade journalist who has covered issues as diverse as aviation, employment and training, welfare reform, economic development and agriculture/agribusiness. She’s also spent five years on “the dark side,”  in senior corporate communications positions at two airlines and an aircraft engine manufacturer.
Benét covered the regional aviation industry from 1993 to 2001.  During that time, she watched as regional carriers grew up and became almost mirror images of their larger airline partners. In this interesting article she explores how high fuel costs and industry changes may create an inventory of great aircraft available at dirt cheap prices (relatively). Not like you’re going to be able to park it in the driveway.

This is a great article that makes you think about an industry that many of us just take for granted …. Aviation is a business and not just a replacement of the Greyhound bus.

Pssst.... Did you hear that gossiping may be good for you?

health-011912-002-617x416
There seems to be a fair amount of research into the benefits of Gossip.

Researchers at UC Berkeley have determined that water cooler chatter and idle office tattling can have stress-relieving benefits, provided it is the correct sort of gossip that is helpful to others and not demeaning.

Pssst.... Now for What your client really thinks

cg-compuwriter
I started my copywriting career in the days of dragons, wizards, hot-type and later, Compugraphics typesetters. Most of you weren’t born yet. In fact, many of your parents were probably still virgins.
My first weekly column was in a weekly tabloid magazine in Texas, and part of my job was to set my column on the Linotype the night before they went to print.

When they invested in a new technology called the Compugraphic typesetter, that portion of my job became much easier. So much so, in fact, that I sometimes composed my column “on the fly” (which drove my editor nuts!)

After nearly a year...

Pssst.... Wanna know what writers think

Baby Sitter's rules applied in business?

When I was younger, my sister and I had the babysitting market cornered in our little town. Supply and demand. There were two of us and tons of them; each week we had our pick. I am a bit embarrassed to say that we actually had a rating system.

Pssst.... Can I annoy you for a second?

aeeae2e81c6961ed0c0b580c37106802
You might be surprised to find out that there has been very little research done on what causes people to be annoyed. Fearful, happy, sad, trusting, and surprised you can find, annoyed, not so much. There would seem to be an unending treasure trove of behaviors these days that could be construed as annoying or perhaps worse, as I think as a society we are rapidly experiencing a dramatic rise in annoying behaviors. So there really is no shortage of possibilities for study. Being annoyed at something at work doesn’t rise to the level of “I’ll quit over this”, but does make you feel like shouting “give me a break!”
While it was not scientific at all, I asked some of my colleagues to list off some of the things that organizations and bosses do that annoy them. I began to compile a list and categorize them. Here are just a few of the one’s that popped out for me, some of which I would quit over.

Pssst.... Everybody’s Creative. Just Don’t Tell The Creatives

In advertising agencies there is a label that is used in an interesting and pretty clear-cut way. If you are a member of the creative department, you are called a creative. As in “the creatives are in a brainstorming session,” or “see if any of the creatives can fit this project in by end of day,” or “where the heck are all the creatives? oh, out at the ping pong table in back.”
