Pssst.... Can you keep a secret . . ? Why we really need to gossip.

If you've just divulged a gossipy titbit to a female friend then set your stopwatch: you've got exactly 32 minutes before she spills the beans.

That's the findings of the skincare line Simple who recently conducted a survey of 3,000 British women to see how long they could keep a secret.

One-in-10 of women surveyed admitted to being completely unable to keep a secret -- no matter how confidential the information shared. And 85 percent said they relished having a good gossip.
"Gossip was also used as a means of punishing misbehavior," says Locke. "In bands of hunter-gatherers, those who failed to honor their family obligations, hoarded food, or acted like a 'big shot' were identified and ostracized through gossip."
Sharing secrets among friends can also build stronger bonds, allowing gossipers to build alliances over a secret that may make everyone feel better about their own lives.

Pssst.... Heard Any Good Gossip Lately?

No, I'm not talking about that juicy tidbit of gossip that tastes so good when first swallowed but sours one's spirit as soon as it is digested. Moreover, I'm definitely not talking about that news that makes you secretly rub your hands together because you just 'knew' the 'truth' would come out about that person who you hoped would one day fall. Destructive, manipulative, vindictive gossip is never good. There is enough teaching and more than enough scriptures warning and commanding us to keep away from this sort of speech.  We are cautioned to keep away from such evildoers that would speak slander and delight in seeing the downfall of others.
